The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) is responsible for statewide law enforcement in Pennsylvania. The PSP are responsible for patrolling all state and federal highways in Pennsylvania which they enforce the vehicle code, automobile inspection, commercial vehicle safety standards, and the PSP provides police protection for municipalities whom don't have a full time police force available. The state police in Pennsylvania provide 27% of primary service for communities across Pennsylvania which is about 60% of all of Pennsylvania municipalities. Also the Pennsylvania State Police administer the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS), which is responsible for providing background checks for firearms purchases in Pennsylvania.
