Department of Transportation

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is responsible for a wide range of services that relate to transportation in the state of Pennsylvania. PennDOT is responsible for the upkeep of the Pennsylvania's roadways which includes about 41,000 miles of state roads and over 25,000 bridges in the state. In addition to the states roadway system PennDOT is responsible for supporting the following aviation, rail traffic, mass transit, intrastate highway shipping traffic, motor vehicle safety & licensing, and driver licensing. PennDOT also supports the Ports of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Erie.

PennDOT is also responsible for vehicle titles and registration of those vehicles and issuing drivers licenses to Pennsylvania citizens. The registration and titles are handled by private and this results in Pennsylvania being the only state to separate motor vehicle offices from it's driver license centers. Driver license centers are all run and owned by PennDOT, unlike motor vehicle offices which are strictly run and controlled by PennDOT however they are privately owned and located across the state.
